The History of Sherwood

In 1889, the city known as Sherwood was first deemed ‘Smockville’ by James Christopher and Mary Ellen Smock. Two years later, in 1891, the U.S. Post Office sent mail addressed to the town of Sherwood to the area, and Sherwood was officially incorporated as an Oregonian town in 1893. Named after England’s Sherwood Forest, Sherwood’s rich green valleys and rolling, fertile hills lend credence to the city’s namesake. The city’s rich soil allows working farms to exist today.
